Anaesthetic Concerns of Surgical Emphysema Following Thyroidectomy.

چکیده
Surgical emphysema secondary to tracheal tear is a rare but serious complication after thyroidectomy. It is usually resolved by conservative management; but in case of compromised airway, early airway control and surgical intervention is required. This is the case report of a 52-year woman diagnosed as thyroid carcinoma, who developed rapidly progressive surgical emphysema involving head and upper thorax, following total thyroidectomy, in post anesthesia care unit (PACU). The complication was related to tracheal tear occurring during excision of huge thyroid mass, encroaching trachea. But with timely assessment in PACU and prompt surgical intervention, we were able to save the patient. Vigilant observation in the early postoperative period is very important in patients undergoing thyroidectomy because early recognition is the key in saving patients with surgical emphysema, postoperatively.

An unpredicted case of tracheal necrosis following thyroidectomy.
Tracheal rupture is a rare condition, and its most common cause is head and neck injury. Nontraumatic disruption of the anterolateral fibrocartilaginous trachea is an exceptional complication following thyroidectomy with few cases reported in literature. We report a case of upper tracheal necrosis arising 15 days after uneventful total thyroidectomy and resulted in pneumomediastinum and subcuta...

BACKGROUND Currently, data are not available concerning a safe insufflation pressure that provides a proper view of the surgical field without adverse metabolic and hemodynamic changes in humans undergoing the robot-assisted thyroidectomy bilateral axillo-breast approach (BABA) using the da Vinci robotic surgical system. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal carbon dioxide (CO₂...
متن کاملBilateral Pneumothorax and Pneumomediastinum Following Total Thyroidectomy with Central Neck Dissection
We describe a 60-year-old woman who developed extensive emphysema, bilateral pneumothorax, and pneumomediastinum after total thyroidectomy and central neck dissection with sacrifice of a recurrent laryngeal nerve. In this report, we discuss the possisle etiology of those rare complications.
متن کاملIncidence of thyroid papillary cancer in contralateral lobe
Background & objectives: Prognosis of thyroid papillary cancer is quite well long lasting, so a 10- year survival is observed in more than 90% cases. In this study, rate of incidence of thyroid papillary cancer in contralateral lobe was assessed among patients who had a surgical thyroidectomy re-operation. Materials & Methods: In this retrospective study, we examined 82 patients diagnosed with...

With great pleasure we take the opportunity to answer the comments of Drs.
